Darker skin tones are more difficult to photograph than lighter ones, and before anyone goes and reports me for reverse racism 😀, let's analyze this in purely technical terms.
Lighter skins pick up and reflect light easily, while darker skin tones absorb light and hide shadows, so here are a few tips to highlight the complexity of the subject, and the importance of choosing an experienced photographer for these jobs.
TOP TIPS FOR PHOTOGRAPHING DARKER SKIN TONES:
Pay attention to the background by looking for a lighter backdrop to bounce or reflect light off.
Darker skins have far more diverse undertones and a larger tonal range from reds, orange, browns to blue undertones, so choosing an environment which compliments the color spectrum of your model is key to creating soothing portraits.
Sculpting the facial features rather than just illuminating them (lighting the edges of a face adds shape and showcases prominent features).
Don't rob your subjects of the complexity & detail in their hair by not lighting it properly.
Take advantage of the 'Golden hour' it's simply gorgeous for darker skin tones.
Darker skin tones look fantastic in bright colors like blues, greens and reds as well as metallics and pastels.
Invest in a photographer whose portfolio demonstrates a body of work etched in a variety of subject and color contrast too.
